Mission Volunteer Community in Montreat

Montreat is launching a new opportunity for young adults who are looking to gain a variety of professional skills while living and discerning in an intentional community. Young adults participating in our Mission Volunteer Community will work across all departments at Montreat while also focusing, with a full-time staff mentor, on a long-term project. As a community, Montreat mission volunteers will spend intentional time together building relationships and discerning what they may like to do after their time in Montreat.

Work

Members of the Mission Volunteer Community will work across all departments of Montreat to support the conference center’s daily operations. From providing outrageous hospitality to guests to preparing for conferences to maintaining trails to working behind the scenes in the office, mission volunteers are able to get valuable experience while exploring a call to work in a church-related institution. Mission volunteers will also have the opportunity to focus in on a long-term project with a full-time staff member throughout their time in Montreat.

Community

Mission Volunteers will live and work together, and so intentional community-building will be a cornerstone of their time together. Through structured and unstructured relationship-building, Mission Volunteers will create a community of young adults in Montreat.

Discernment

Especially for young adults on their own for the first time, discernment takes many forms. Whether it’s the mentorship of a full-time staff member, guided conversations, or independent reflection, the Mission Volunteer Community will create space for young adult participants to explore what’s next for them. Of course, the mountains provide a beautiful setting for self-exploration and big ideas!

Nitty Gritty

The Mission Volunteer Community will live and work in Montreat, with the potential to dedicate some work hours to partner organizations in the Swannanoa Valley. Participants will receive a regular stipend, housing, and will qualify to apply for student-loan repayment options. The volunteer term will last eight to ten months (volunteers may be able to transition to a summer staff position beginning in May).

Applications will be available in the spring of 2018 for the 2018-2019 Mission Volunteer Community.
