Each Sunday morning during Montreat Conference Center’s summer season, a highlight of the week is the Sunday worship service in Anderson Auditorium as the community gathers to hear from noted Christian leaders across the country and to experience innovative worship through the spoken word, music, and art.
The Rev. Dr. Brad Smith, pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, is guest preacher on June 25. His previous call was with the Souper Bowl of Caring, a ministry he describes as being an inch deep and 3,000 miles wide. As pastor of Eastminster, Dr. Smith describes his ministry as “being an inch wide but as deep as life itself. The great variety of opportunities I have as a pastor is both the joy and the challenge of serving in this position.
“My degrees come from University of Georgia and Columbia Theological Seminary, but some of my richest learning came from listening to and learning from steel workers, construction workers, and sobriety seekers in my late teens and early twenties. After brief forays into the important ministries of alcohol education and higher education, I came to see God was calling me to ordained ministry.”
Earlier this month, Dr. Smith and his wife Nancy celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary, and in what he describes as “a frighteningly Presbyterian path: our son will start seminary this fall and our older daughter finishes serving as a young adult volunteer in Glasgow at the end of July. Our youngest just finished her first year of college.”
Dr. Smith chooses as his text Matthew 10:24-39, passages from the teachings of Jesus that involve the high level of loyalty required and far-reaching rewards of being a Christian.
All of the summer Sunday services in the series are at 10:30 am in Anderson Auditorium, just off Assembly Drive in Montreat. Child care is available for children six months through kindergarten at the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road.
As is the summer tradition, the community is invited to the lunch buffet at 11:45 am in the Assembly Inn’s Galax Dining Room following worship. Lunch tickets can be purchased at the Assembly Inn front desk.
A beloved tradition at Montreat is to close out the day with a Sunday evening hymn sing at 7 pm in the lobby of the historic Assembly Inn.
