2008 Fiscal Fitness Seminar

August 20-22, 2008

For members of the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (USA)

Seminar is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

This one-day financial planning education seminar is designed for:

  • Clergy and lay Benefits Plan members under age 50, or
  • New clergy of any age applying for the Seminary Debt Assistance Grant Program, and
  • Their spouses or fiancés.

How “fiscally fit” are you? Join us for a financial planning education seminar that helps you to coordinate your personal finances and Benefits Plan coverage to your maximum advantage.

Each offering is unique. The amount of time spent covering the various topics depends on the questions, concerns and energy you bring to it. A general overview of the topics to be discussed is:

  • Gathering participants’ concerns
  • Understanding your Medical, Pension, Death and Disability benefits
  • Understanding Effective Salary and Terms of Call
  • Coping with and reducing debt
  • Saving for personal goals and children’s education
  • Determing insurance needs
  • Beginning a retirement plan
  • Taking advantage of investment opportunities

Leadership

Steven R. Fleming, D.Min.
Steven is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park and has received a Doctor of Ministry from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond. He and his wife, Brenda, have been married for more than thirty years.

Before joining the Board of Pensions, Steven served as the Pastor/Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church, Westminster, MD, for more than ten years. His pastoral experience includes calls in Virginia, Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Steven has been writing and leading seminars on clergy finances, tax issues, negotiating Terms of Call, and related church worker topics for over 25 years. He published study guides on the Book of Order and the Book of Confessions, and some of his articles have been published in Church Management: The Clergy Journal, Interpretation, Abingdon Preaching Annual, and Monday Morning.

Program Fee

There is no Board of Pensions seminar registration fee because the seminars are a Plan benefit. Participants must either be an active or inactive Plan member or the spouse of an active or inactive Plan member.

A Montreat “Miscellaneous Fee” of $10.00 per person covers the cost of breaks, copies, and other related expenses.

Cost for Housing and Meals

Rates include Wednesday and Thursday nights’ lodging, plus Wednesday supper through Friday breakfast. Additional charges will apply for any extended stay.

Assembly Inn

  • Single with private bath: $226 (member only)
  • Single with connecting bath: $188 (member only)
  • Double with private bath: $296 (member & spouse)
  • Double with connecting bath: $276 (member & spouse)

If you wish to stay at Assembly Inn, an additional $40 per person deposit is required to hold your room until arrival.

Registration Information/Childcare

  • Advance registration with the Board of Pensions’ Member Education team is required due to limited seating.*
  • Our education seminars are a Plan benefit for clergy and lay Plan members and their spouses.
  • Participants are responsible for the cost of their travel and meals, as well as any lodging they deem necessary.

*Note: To ensure your seat(s) for the seminar, we strongly recommend that you obtain your Board of Pensions registration confirmation before making lodging reservations.
