2008 Spring Spiritual Formation Retreat
April 10-13, 2008
“God’s Encircling: Celtic Christianity”

General Information
Things “Celtic” are very popular today. But how can we know how to find authentic tradition amidst a lot of creative invention? This course will focus on writings and artwork that truly reflect the rich beliefs of Christians living in early Scotland, Ireland, and other Celtic lands. We will learn about the real St. Patrick, as well as lesser-known great saints of the Celtic Christian tradition. Moving beyond the “golden age of saints” (5th to the 9th centuries), a wonderful collection of prayers from the 19th century Highlands and Islands of Scotland will show us a God experienced in the everyday lives of the farmers who prayed them. Through informative lectures, small group reflection, private time, worship, and opportunities for artistic expression, we will explore Celtic Christianity’s relevance for our spiritual journeys. One important theme, “Thresholds,” explores how the borders of time and space in our lives can be opportunities for transformational experiences with God.
If you have ever wondered about ancient Celtic traditions and their echoes today, this course should give you both information as well as experiences to determine for yourself their meaning and relevance for your spiritual journey.
