“Religious Education Theory and Practice”
Educators and pastors are called to positions of educational leadership within congregations and judicatories. Our understandings and experiences with religious education create an inherent theory of religious education and its practice within an ecclesiological setting. This theory is the result of reading, reflection, dialogue, practice, and critical thinking. The way in which one administers, leads, teaches, and nurtures is based on the value of certain theoretical and theological principles over others. The purpose of this course is to enable participants to become familiar with the components of religious education theory; to identify and critically assess personal theoretical practice; and to reflect on the intersection of theory with the congregation’s practice of religious education.

Key Leader
Cindy Kissel-Ito is the director of the Extended Campus Program at Union Presbyterian Seminary, where she is also affiliate professor of Christian Education. Her interests include educational theory and practice for the contemporary church.
