“Rooted in Love”
The 2012 Middle School Conference invites you to:
- Dig into God’s word in meaningful ways,
- Sprout a sense of purpose in God’s world,
- Grow closer to God through inspiring worship, prayer, mission and play,
- Create an open, faith-filled community of youth and adults who learn from one another.
Come join us as we dig into the 2012 Montreat Middle School Conference and explore what it means to be Rooted in Love. God is love, and we have all been “rooted and grounded in love.” (Eph. 3:17b) Prepare to grow in faith, connect with one another, and claim our roots in God’s nurturing spirit.
For youth who have completed fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth grade, and for their group leaders.

Key Leaders

- Theresa Cho, San Francisco, CA; Preacher; Associate Pastor at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. She loves living in San Francisco: the view, the food, the diversity of cultures. Her family and dog Chewy provide her constant hours of love and entertainment.

- Landon Whitsitt, Liberty, MO; Keynoter; Vice Moderator of the 219th General Assembly of the PC(USA). As a youth, Landon found that summer camps and conferences were the places where he could discover the different gifts and passions God had given him. Now, he loves to travel and speak to people about discovering who it is that God has called them to be.

- Lynn Turnage, Greensboro, NC; Recreation Leadership; Director of Children & Family Ministries at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Lynn calls Montreat one of her “holy lands.” She’s been around Montreat most of her life and thinks playing in the creek with her children is a Sabbath experience. She loves chocolate, movies, adventure, Chinese food, pottery, and her two girls.

- Alex Dorsam, Mt. Pleasant, SC; Recreation Leadership; Youth Director for Palmetto Presbyterian Church. Some of his greatest memories are of Montreat Youth Conferences. He learned so much and met so many great people. He’s ecstatic to be coming back after a few years of being away! He enjoys soccer, hiking, camping, and the mountains!

- Jamie Thompson, Kinston, North Carolina; Music Leadership; Jaime is freshly graduated from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond. Her home church is Queen Street United Methodist Church. Jamie loves playing outside, reading good books, and Christmas lights lit up all year ‘round!

General Information for the Middle School Conference
- Eligibility: The Middle School Conference at Presbyterian College is designed for youth who have completed fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth grade by summer 2012, and for their group leaders. All groups must include at least one adult for every six young people. Adults must be fully registered and housed with their youth in campus housing. Child care is not provided during this conference.

- Location: The Middle School Conference will be held on the campus of Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. We’ll be gathering each day in the Belk Auditorium and enjoying many of their other facilities. Presbyterian College has reserved their air-conditioned dorm space (linens are not provided) and much of their campus for us. We prefer no groups “commute.”
- Conference Schedule: Details will be included in a packet of information that group leaders will receive much closer to the conference. Registration will be Wednesday afternoon after 3 PM, and each day will include keynote, worship, recreation, singing, and many other activities. In small groups, young people and adults will explore the conference theme using a manual written especially for this particular conference. The last event will be a worship service at 9 AM following Sunday breakfast.
- Opportunities for High School Students: You have an opportunity to participate in the Middle School Conference in a unique way – as a member of the Work Crew. We are looking for high school students who want to attend the conference with their church groups. You will have the chance to help the conference planning team during the week. You will work behind the scenes, learn the ropes, and get an up-close look at what is involved in running a Middle School Conference. Your work crew application must be submitted by April 15, 2012. The cost is $165. The number of work crew members will be limited.

- Small Group Leaders: If you are 21 + and are interested in applying to be a small group leader for the Middle School Conference, call 800.572.2257, ext. 327, or download a Small Group Leader Application. You may be both a small group leader and a back home leader if there is another adult with your home group attending the conference. Your registration fee is waived, and your room, board, and travel are covered! All small group leaders must be members of congregations that are members of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (for a listing of member churches, go to World Alliance of Reformed Churches).
- Scholarships: Limited scholarship funds are available for this conference.
- Planning Teams: Be part of the planning for a future Montreat Middle School Conference. Apply now!
