Collegiate Summer Staff Crucial to Conference Center’s Ministry

“When we look at so many summer activities in such a short period of time here at Montreat Conference Center, it becomes evident that the conference center’s collegiate summer staffers are crucial to our ministry,” said Bob Tuttle, Vice President for the Center for Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Montreat Conference Center. “We are indeed grateful for their service.”

Early this summer, approximately 150 people, mostly college students, arrived at Montreat Conference Center from all over the United States. Following an intensive orientation period, they donned their bright blue “staff” t-shirts and went to work as summer camp counselors, life guards, facilities and production crew members, creative assistants, retail assistants, craft center helpers, office assistants, and more.

“Our year-round employees really depend on the summer staff during our busiest season,” agreed conference center president George Barber. “This summer, I took particular pride in seeing these young people rise to the occasion as Montreat Conference Center hosted the funeral service for Ruth Graham. As the whole world watched,” he continued, “our summer staff responded with grace to the needs of the Graham family, the media, and thousands of mourners. At the same time, they seamlessly turned the facilities around after one conference of 1,000+ attendees and prepared for the start of a second. It all happened in the space of three sleepless days and nights. It was an enormous effort and it was a job well done.”

“I think a lot of students are drawn to work at Montreat because of the memories they have of visiting here as children or as youth,” said Cat Williams, the summer staff Creative Assistant and veteran of 10 summers on staff or attending conferences at Montreat. “All of the jobs provide great hands-on work experience, especially for those going into education or parish ministry. And even though the hours are long and the summers are hot, I think we’re all grateful for our time here because of the friends we’ve made, the people we’ve reached out to, and all the experiences we’ve been able to share. Given the opportunity,” she concluded, “I don’t know many people who would turn down the chance to live in such a beautiful place and get paid for having such a great summer.” See our summer staff photo album…
