Editor/Publisher of Christian Century Magazine to Speak at Montreat Conference Center
The Rev. Dr. John M. Buchanan, Pastor of Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church and editor/publisher of The Christian Century magazine, will be the guest speaker for worship in Montreat Conference Center on Sunday, July 18. Dr. Buchanan’s visit is part of the 11-week summer worship series presented annually by the conference center and featuring some of the most highly acclaimed preachers in the country.
Previously, Dr. Buchanan has held a variety of leadership positions in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He served as Moderator of the denomination’s 208th General Assembly in 1996-1997, has represented the Presbyterian Church as a member of the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches, and was an Observer to the Seventh Assembly of The World Council of Churches in Canberra, Australia. He has also held numerous board memberships and has written three books; Being Church, Becoming Community; Sermons for the City; and A New Church for a New World.
Dr. Buchanan’s sermon, “Distracted,” is taken from the New Testament Gospel of Luke. Worship begins at 10:30AM in Montreat Conference Center’s Anderson Auditorium. Childcare for children six months through completed kindergarten is available at the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road. Prior to worship, the July Sunday Bible study continues at 9:00 AM in the Walkup Building across Community Center Circle from the auditorium. The conference center’s Summer Theologian-in-Residence, the Rev. Dr. Dean Thompson, retiring President of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, (Louisville, KY), will offer the following: July 18: Pearl S. Buck: Compassionate Angel; and July 25: Reinhold Niebuhr: Prophet of Biblical Relevance. Following worship, a lunch buffet will be served at the Assembly Inn’s Galax Dining Room, noon to 1:30PM.
