Montreat Conference Center Hosts Ten-Week Summer Worship Series

The Rev. Dr. David Renwick

A 10-week summer worship series begins this Sunday, June 1, at Montreat Conference Center with the Rev. Dr. David Renwick, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, SC. Offered as a gift from the conference center to Montreat visitors, residents, and worshippers from surrounding communities, the acclaimed series features some of the country’s most notable guest preachers and choirs.

Born to Scottish parents in Johore Bahru, Malaysia (near Singapore), in 1952, Dr. Renwick and his parents returned to Edinburgh, Scotland in 1957. His education carried him from St. Andrews University in Scotland, where he majored in Applied Mathematics, to Union College in New York where he was an exchange student. He then attended Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA, and went on to Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA, where he was graduated with a Ph.D. in 1988. He has answered calls to churches in Canada, Virginia, Texas, Kentucky, and has been in his current position in South Carolina since 2006.

In addition to articles and reviews in Interpretation, Lectionary Homiletics, and Journal for Preachers, Dr. Renwick’s publications include Paul, the Temple, and the Presence of God (Atlanta Scholars Press, 1991) and The Learning Bible (New York American Bible Society, 2000), assistant editor. He and his wife, Currie, a native of Gainesville, GA, have three grown children, and when asked about his pastimes, Rev. Renwick said he enjoys preaching, golf, and a little tennis.

Sunday’s sermon, “This Call’s for You,” comes from the Gospel of John and the Old Testament book of Esther. The Chancel Choir of the First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, under the director of Holt Andrews, with organist Marcia Andrews, will join Rev. Renwick. Worship will also include the dedication of Montreat Conference Center’s 2008 college summer staff.

A study of the Psalms, hosted by Montreat Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), will be offered at 9:30 AM in the Presbyterian Heritage Center, followed by worship at 11:00 AM in Montreat’s Anderson Auditorium. Child care during worship is available in the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road for children six months through completed kindergarten. At noon, worshippers are invited to enjoy a lunch buffet at the Assembly Inn’s Galax Dining Room. Learn more about summer worship at Montreat Conference Center.
