New Sunday Worship Time for Summer at Montreat Conference Center

The Rev. Dr. Victor Pentz

Each Sunday morning throughout the summer, worshipers from Montreat and surrounding communities gather at Montreat Conference Center’s Anderson Auditorium to hear sermons from some of the best-known, most respected preachers in the nation. “This summer’s line-up is no exception,” stated Merri Alexander, Vice President for the Center for Faith and Life and a member of the Summer Worship Task Force. “I’m confident that the diversity and level of excellence these speakers will be bringing to the pulpit over the next weeks will far exceed expectation.” The Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Senior Pastor Emeritus at Riverside Church, New York, N.Y.; the Rev. Dr. Will Willimon, Bishop of the United Methodist Church; the Rev. Dr. John Buchanan, editor/publisher for Christian Century magazine; the Rev. Dr. Joseph Roberts, Pastor Emeritus at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga.; and the Rev. Dr. Brian McLaren, author of Everything Must Change and Generous Orthodoxy are just a few of the acclaimed preachers slated for the eleven Sunday series.

Alexander went on to stress one notable difference in the schedule this summer. “We have changed our worship time to 10:30AM,” she explained. “It’s a departure from what we’ve done in past summers, and I think the change is going to be a good one.”

The 2010 Summer Sunday Worship Series at Montreat Conference Center begins Sunday, June 6, with the Rev. Dr. Victor Pentz, Senior Pastor at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Pentz grew up in Southern California, is an alumnus of Princeton Theological Seminary, and received his doctorate from Fuller Seminary. Among his many pastoral experiences are preaching to the President of the United States, serving as chaplain to the crews of three space shuttle launches, serving as chaplain to the world’s largest rodeo, and running an evangelistic beach ministry for surfers. Named Atlanta Police Department’s Citizen of the Year in 2006, Dr. Pentz is committed to walking his talk as a missional believer. Called into ministry amidst the campus tumult of the 1960’s, his passion for Scripture is evident in the way he applies God’s timeless truth to current events and everyday life. His sermon this Sunday is titled “It’s Time to Play for Real” and is taken from I Corinthians 9:19-27.

During worship, child care for children six months through completed kindergarten is available at the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road. Following worship, a lunch buffet will be served at the Assembly Inn’s Galax Dining Room, noon to 1:30PM. Learn more about the 2010 Summer Worship Series at Montreat Conference Center.
