President of Columbia Theological Seminary to Preach at Montreat Conference Center

For the third in its continuing summer worship series, Montreat Conference Center is pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Laura Mendenhall, president of Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA, as the guest preacher for Sunday, June 15. Dr. Mendenhall’s sermon, “Surrounded by a Cloud of Witnesses,” will be based on readings from the Old Testament book of Isaiah and the New Testament epistle to the Hebrews. She will be joined by the Grace Covenant Choir of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville, under the direction of Barry Oliver. The choir will offer pre-service music beginning at 10:30 AM. Worship will include the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

Dr. Mendenhall received her D.Min. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, TX, in 1997, and her M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Francisco, CA, in 1980. She also holds degrees from Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, VA, and Austin College, Sherman, TX. In addition, she has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by Austin College (2000) and Presbyterian College.(2004). Dr. Mendenhall’s ministry has included time spent as a missionary in Zaire, Africa; calls to churches in Florida and Texas; and from 2000 to the present, service as president of Columbia Theological Seminary. Dr. Mendenhall has been a preacher and teacher at Montreat Conference Center for Youth Conferences (1983 and 2003), Worship and Music (1999), the College Conference (2001), the Women’s Conference (2002), and the Christian Education/Mission Conference (2002).

A study of the Psalms, hosted by Montreat Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), will be offered at 9:30 AM in the Presbyterian Heritage Center, followed by worship at 11:00 AM in Montreat Conference Center’s Anderson Auditorium. Child care during worship is available in the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road for children six months through completed kindergarten.
