The Rev. Shannon Johnson Kershner was called as pastor of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in August of 2009. Over this past year, her ministry within the congregation and surrounding communities, not the least of which has been her gift as a dynamic and insightful preacher, has nurtured a growing and supportive following. On Sunday, July 25, Rev. Kershner will bring that skill to the pulpit of Anderson Auditorium as the guest preacher for Montreat Conference Center’s on-going 2010 Summer Sunday Worship Series.

Kershner, her husband Greg, and their two children came to Black Mountain from Woodhaven Presbyterian Church in Irving, TX, where she served as pastor for seven years. Graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Kershner went on to receive a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, where she was awarded the Columbia leadership Award for demonstrating the greatest potential for future leadership within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Describing her leadership style as one of vision and collegiality, Kershner uses her good humor and sensitivity to assist people – especially lay people – in finding their own voices of leadership and vision. Quick to share power with others, she believes God speaks through the voices of people gathered in community. Kershner’s sermon this Sunday will be taken from readings in the Gospel of John and Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome.

Worship begins at 10:30 AM. Prior to the worship service, a Sunday theological study – Reinhold Niebuhr: Prophet of Biblical Relevance – will be offered at 9:00 AM in the Walkup Building across Community Center Circle from the auditorium. The study is part of a series being led by the Rev. Dr. Dean Thompson, Montreat’s summer Theologian-in-Residence and retiring president of Louisville Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY). Following worship, lunch will be served in Assembly Inn’s historic Galax Dining Room. Learn more about the 2010 Summer Worship Series at Montreat Conference Center.
