The Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long is Guest Preacher at Montreat Conference Center

The Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long

Sunday, August 3, Montreat Conference Center welcomes the Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long as guest preacher for the final worship service of the conference center’s 2008 summer worship series. Currently the Bandy Professor of Preaching at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Long has served churches in Georgia and New Jersey. He has taught preaching for over thirty years – at Erskine Theological Seminary (Due West, SC), Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, GA), Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, NJ), and since 2000, at Candler. Dr. Long is the author of textbooks on preaching and worship, collections of sermons, and biblical commentaries on Matthew and Hebrews. His more recent books are Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian and The Witness of Preaching, Second Edition.

Dr. Long’s sermon, entitled “Wrestling Jacob,” is taken from readings in Genesis and the Gospel of Matthew. He will be joined in worship by the Chancel Choir of Second Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, directed by John Moody, with Beverly Barrs, organist. The choir will offer a pre-service program of music in Anderson Auditorium at 10:30 AM, followed by worship at 11 AM. Child care during worship is available in the Updike Child Care Center on Texas Road for children six months through completed kindergarten. At noon, worshippers are invited to enjoy a lunch buffet at the Assembly Inn’s Galax Dining Room.

Montreat Conference Center would like to thank the 2008 summer worship team: the Rev. Dr. George W. Ramsey, Theologian-in-Residence; the Rev. Dr. Mary Miller Brueggemann, Liturgy Writer; Dr. Robert P. Keener, Music Director; and Stephanie Sorge Wing, Worship Coordinator, for a summer of hard work and dedication. Thank you also to the volunteers who assisted in the worship services and to the 2008-2009 Summer Worship Task Force: Jimmy Galloway, Jim Layman, Peggy Scheu, Richard Ray, John Richardson, Bill Straughan, and Merri Bass.
