Dr. Silas M. “Si” Vaughn died peacefully on May 9. 2015, at the Parker Ridge Retirement Community in Blue Hill, Maine. He was 89 years old.
Formerly the president of both Montreat Conference Center and Montreat College, Vaughn is known for navigating the separation of the two institutions and leading the college during its progression to a four-year baccalaureate institution.
Vaughn served as president of Montreat Conference Center from June of 1972 to September of 1975. He also served as Montreat College president from 1972 to 1991. He is credited for leading several capital improvement projects for the College and the development of the nationally recognized Discovery Wilderness Program. Prior to his work in Montreat, Vaughn held positions at UNC Charlotte, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Southwestern University, Davis & Elkins College. He attended American University in Cairo, Gordon Military Academy, and Presbyterian College. He also served as a consultant to many colleges, as well as President of the National Council of Independent Junior Colleges. An ordained deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Vaughn was an active church leader and mission volunteer.
