Trail Advisory In Effect

posted on Nov. 15, 2016

Given the extreme drought conditions and threat of wildfires in Western North Carolina, the Mountain Retreat Association is issuing a Trail Advisory for its network of trails in the conservation easement surrounding Montreat. Signs will be posted at trail entrances, and information will be distributed to guests as well as to other locations that might refer hikers to our trails.

Under the Trail Advisory:
• Hikers are required to observe the ban on outside fires.
• Camping of any kind and nighttime hiking are not
• Smoking is not permitted.

The option of closing entirely our Montreat trails to all hikers was seriously considered and remains a possibility. We will continue to monitor the situation in our wilderness and with other local trail systems in the immediate area, which to this point also remain open.

If you hike in our wilderness, you can play an important role. If you observe a violation of the Trail Advisory, notify the individual and call the Assembly Inn Front Desk (828-669-2911) with details. Our staff will follow up.

In the event of a wildfire, call 911 immediately.

Maintaining the safety of Montreat residents and guests is our highest priority. When we are all mindful of potential concerns, the threat of wildfire is greatly diminished. Thank you all for your help.

President, Mountain Retreat Association
