Youth Conference I

Lift Every Voice

June 3 - June 9, 2018

This conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. Activities include morning energizers, music, keynote, small group meetings, afternoon recreation activities, and evening worship.

Montreat Youth Conference 2018 will strive to be a place where authenticity, community, connection, and God’s truth thrive. It will seek to be an inclusive place where each voice can be heard and where each heart can be molded; where change is invited, challenge is expected, and where all are embraced. Read the full goal statement.

Attending a Montreat Youth Conference may be the single best thing your youth take part in over the summer. Watch our video and start making plans today!

Key Leadership

Mihee Kim-Kort (Keynoter) is an ordained Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) minister with degrees in divinity and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and English literature and religious studies from the University of Colorado in beautiful Boulder. Currently, Mihee is a PhD student in Religious Studies at Indiana University. She juggles various jobs including being a wife to another Presbyterian minister, raising three children, itinerant preaching and speaking, writing, hanging out with young people, and struggling with being an Enneagram 7. She loves all things church, and believes in what God is doing in and through it, even despite the huge failings and egos that plague the human institution.

Montreat Conference CenterShavon Starling-Louis (Preacher) grew up in Florida, raised by a hardworking grandmother. After graduating in 2008 from St. Leo University with a BA in psychology, she accompanied her husband, Kirkley, while he served a tour of duty with the U. S. Coast Guard. After their return, Shavon entered Columbia Theological Seminary and graduated with her MDiv in May 2013. While there, she distinguished herself in an in-depth research effort at the intersection of art, worship, and multi-culturalism for which she was awarded honors in the area of practical theology.

Montreat Conference CenterMichelle ‘Mich’ Phillips (Recreation Leader) hails from the midwest and has found a home away from home at Montreat. She is married to Eddie and is mom to twin boys William and Shawn. She has been a part of youth ministry for over 20 years having served four churches, on several planning teams, keynoted several local retreats, and loves Presbyterian Youth Triennium workcrew. While recreation is a new role for Michelle, she is excited to lead such an important part of ministry in general, and always loves a good chance to laugh at herself.

Montreat Conference CenterJacob Kennedy (Recreation Leader) is from Wilson, NC, but is a student at Presbyterian College, in Clinton, SC (Go Blue Hose!). In his free time Jacob enjoys playing golf with his Dad, listening to rap and folk music, and exploring new places. Jacob is most looking forward to worshipping together and creating new and fun games for everyone to play.

Nathan Proctor (Music Leader) grew up in Iowa and holds degrees in church music and organ performance from St. Olaf College and Indiana University. Nathan is currently organist and director of worship, music, and arts at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, MN. In addition to overseeing a large and vibrant music program, each week he leads two worship services at the organ and directs choirs of youth and adults. Nathan has written articles for Call to Worship and Presbyterians Today, and he enjoys trips for mission work, for fun, and for coffee.

Montreat Conference CenterArreasha Bryant (Music Leader) is an enthusiastic, fun, loving individual that keeps God, her kids, family, music, and serving humanity at the forefront of her day, second by second. She is founder of MuSec and music director for Holsey Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Columbus, Georgia.

Housing: There are numerous housing options to meet the needs of various size groups, including Montreat Conference Center’s Assembly Inn, Winsborough, and Glen Rock Inn, which include meals in the Galax Dining Room in the Assembly Inn. Housing is also available in the Montreat College residence halls, which include meals in Howerton Dining Hall. You may also choose to arrange your own accommodations and register for the conference separately. You may request a private cottage list by emailing hopeb@montreat.org or check out our list of other housing options in Montreat! Opportunities for College Students: You have an opportunity to participate in the Youth Conference as a member of the collegiate work crew. We are looking for college students who want to attend the conference with their church groups. You will have the chance to help the conference planning team during the week. You will work behind the scenes, learn the ropes, and get a close-up look at what is involved in running a Youth Conference. Look for more work crew information in your back home packet. No application is necessary; just make sure that you are registered as a part of your church group.

Opportunities for Younger Children: Learn more about the Clubs & child care program. Pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited.

Opportunities for Adults: If you are 21+, a member of a denomination in the Reformed tradition, and are interested in applying to be a small group leader for the Youth Conferences, call 828.419.9833, or download a small group leader application. What is The Jeremiah Project? For young people who have an interest in worship leadership as well as a hunger to explore God’s call on their lives. Rising juniors and seniors who have previously participated in a Montreat Youth Conference may apply to be part of a special small group that prepares for worship leadership, participates in keynote and discusses vocation. Back home leaders will receive this packet 60 days before their conference begins. More information and online application to come!
