A Missing Peace

This conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. Activities include morning energizers, music, keynote, small group meetings, afternoon recreation activities, and evening worship.

The 2017 Montreat Youth Conference will provide:

  • a safe space for youth to be heard by modeling a loving, nurturing, and supportive community as the body of Christ where all feel affirmed and included.
  • an environment where participants form and deepen relationships with leaders and their peers by engaging the issues of the world, modeling for each other a consistent life of faith, and dreaming about ways to change the church.
  • meaningful ways to connect to the living word through concrete spiritual practices during small group, recreation, keynote, and worship.

Conference Rates

Rates below are PER PERSON and include only the conference fee (starting at $260). Room, meals, and community services fee* are not included in this rate.

  • On or before January 20th: $260
  • Between January 21st and February 20th: $270
  • Between February 21st and March 20th: $280
  • Between March 21st and April 20th: $290
  • After April 20th: $300

Note: Although we require at least one fully registered adult in your group, we recommend one registered adult chaperone for every six youth that attend the conference.

*Please note: An additional $5 per person community services fee will be added to your reservation. This fee covers public services provided by the Town and the fire district.

Housing & Meal Rates

Rates below are PER PERSON and include a room for six nights and meals in the Galax Dining Room, Sunday supper through Saturday breakfast. (For example: If two people are in a room in Assembly Inn with a private bath, each person will pay $410.50 for their room and meals.)

  • Glen Rock Inn: Triple Shared Bath: $280.50, Double Shared Bath: $335.50, Single Shared Bath: $500.50
  • Winsborough: Double Shared Bath: $320.50, Single Shared Bath: $470.50
  • Assembly Inn: Triple Private Bath: $350.50*, Double Private Bath: $440.50, Single Private Bath: $710.50, Double Shared Bath: $380.50, Single Shared Bath: $590.50

*A limited number of triple rooms are available in Assembly Inn. An aerobed will be provided for the third person in the room.

Registration Information

Group leaders must register their youth groups as a block using the 2017 Youth Conference Registration Packet for GROUPS.  If you have already registered and need to make an addition or cancellation to your reservation, please complete and return the Additions/Cancellations Form.

Each conference is limited. All registrations will be processed in the order received. There will be no registrations by phone. See the registration packet for refund policy.

Key Leadership

Montreat Conference CenterHeather Shortlidge (Keynoter) Heather loves asking questions, getting lost, and experimenting in the kitchen. Growing up, she trained as a classical ballet dancer. Currently, she’s a certified yoga instructor. She’s rarely without a puppy by her side, volunteering as a puppy raiser for a local organization that trains service dogs. Her current pup is a yellow lab named Buddy. Heather pays the bills by working as the associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, where she’s served for the past nine years. Heather will be bringing four young people to join her in keynoting, Emma Lander, Jackson Borges, John Morrison, and Jonáš Syrovátka.

Montreat Conference CenterBruce Reyes-Chow (Preacher) Bruce is a San Francisco-based pastor who speaks and writes of race, faith, social media, and parenting. He is the transitional pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church, a senior consultant at the Center for Progressive Renewal, and the primary dog-walker of canines, Fawn and Vespa. He is married to Robin Pugh and had three daughters, Evelyn, Abby, and Annie.

Montreat Conference CenterZach Wells (Music Leader) Zach is a musician and songwriter based out of Dallas, TX, where he is an associate director of music at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. Between his studies at Presbyterian College, Zach spent his summers in Montreat working on summer staff. In his free time, you can find Zach writing at the piano, exploring new cities, or searching for the best queso in town.

Montreat Conference CenterSam Burchfield (Music Leader) Sam grew up in Seneca, SC, where he attended Fort Hill Presbyterian Church. He went to Montreat Youth Conference each year of high school and then worked on Montreat Summer Staff during college as the ʺMusic Manʺ for Clubs. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s in public relations and music business and then moved to Atlanta in 2014, where he is pursuing his career as a performing artist, songwriter, and full-time musician.

Montreat Conference CenterSonia Lee (Recreation Leader) Sonia is an avid Parrot Head (Fins up!) who loves Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and cheering for the mighty Clemson Tigers! She rarely misses episodes of The Voice or Modern Family. In her play time, she enjoys being outdoors, reading, Farkeling, spending time at the beach, chilling with friends on her “Dock,” laughing from the depths of her soul, and re-creating with the community of faith.

Montreat Conference CenterLiz Holloway (Recreation Leader) Liz grew up going to Montreat West in Colorado (she swears it was a thing), and fell in love with the sense of belonging it gave her as a young person. When she’s not teaching really cute small people about the amazing world we live in (her true passion), she’s probably cooking something delicious with people she loves, wandering through the mountains with the same people she loves, or singing with the sunroof open and some iced coffee in the cup-holder.

Your youth group can make a real difference in the world, while the Youth Conference is making a difference for them! Questions about adding a mission experience? Eligibility: The Montreat Youth Conferences are designed for high school students, entering freshmen through graduated seniors, and for their group leaders. Although we require at least one fully registered adult in your group, we recommend one registered adult chaperone for every six youth that attend the conference. Adults must be housed with their youth.

Housing: There are numerous housing options to meet the needs of various size groups, including Montreat Conference Center’s Assembly Inn, Winsborough, and Glen Rock Inn, which include meals in the Galax Dining Room in the Assembly Inn. Housing is also available in the Montreat College residence halls, which include meals in Howerton Dining Hall. You may also choose to arrange your own accommodations and register for the conference separately. You may request a private cottage list by emailing hopeb@montreat.org or check out our list of other housing options in Montreat! A special meal package is available for individuals and/or groups staying in private cottages who would like to purchase lunch or supper at the Galax Dining Room (contact the registrar, hopeb@montreat.org to make your reservation).

Opportunities for College Students: You have an opportunity to participate in the Youth Conference as a member of the collegiate work crew. We are looking for college students who want to attend the conference with their church groups. You will have the chance to help the conference planning team during the week. You will work behind the scenes, learn the ropes, and get a close-up look at what is involved in running a Youth Conference. Look for more work crew information in your back home packet. No application is necessary; just make sure that you are registered as a part of your church group.

Opportunities for Younger Children: Learn more about the Clubs & child care program. Pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited.

Opportunities for Adults: If you are 21+, a member of a denomination in the Reformed tradition, and are interested in applying to be a small group leader for the Youth Conferences, call 828.419.9833, or download a small group leader application. You may be both a small group leader and a back home leader ONLY if there is another adult with your home group attending the conference. Your registration fee is waived, and your room, board, and travel are covered! All small group leaders must be members of congregations that are members of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (for a listing of member churches, go to www.wcrc.ch).

What is The Jeremiah Project? For young people who have an interest in worship leadership as well as a hunger to explore God’s call on their lives. Rising juniors and seniors who have participated in a Montreat Youth Conference before may apply to be part of a special small group that prepares for worship leadership, participates in keynote and discusses vocation. Back home leaders will receive this packet 60 days before their conference begins. Download more information and apply online now!

Back-Home Information: The Youth Conference Back-Home Information web page will help you prepare for this summer’s youth conference. Sixty days prior to your conference, you will receive a packet via email with additional information specific to your conference week.

Back Home Group Devotional Guide: The back home devotional guide is designed so that either youth or adult leaders can facilitate an end-of-day wrap up and devotional during the conference week.

Covenant and Medical Form: Download the Covenant and Medical Form. Make enough copies (back & front or stapled together) for each registered participant in your group. Have each person (including adults, college students, and children who will be purchasing wristbands for keynote and/or recreation only) complete the covenant and medical form. Make sure each youth and work crew’s covenant has a parent/ guardian signature. Please bring a set to on-site registration and a set to keep for your records.

Commissioning Service Liturgy: In response to requests, we’ve developed brief liturgy for a short service for commissioning the young people and adult leaders who are heading to a Montreat Youth Conference this summer!

Pre-Conference Meeting Planning: Being part of the Montreat Youth Conference requires preparation, planning, packing, and prayer. We have prepared a pre-conference session for you to download. Use it to help you prepare your group for Montreat.

Scholarships: Limited scholarships are available for this conference.
